Why Are NHS Mental Health Waiting Times So Long in Norfolk & Suffolk?— and How Private Counselling Can Help.

Why so many people are struggling — and how accessible private counselling can help

For many people in Norfolk and Suffolk, reaching out for mental‑health support is already a huge step. But what happens when you finally ask for help, only to be told the waiting list is months — or even years — long?

Across our region, thousands of people are stuck in exactly that position. NHS mental‑health waiting times in Norfolk and Suffolk are among the longest in England, leaving many people without the support they need at the time they need it most.

As a counsellor based in Lowestoft, I see the impact of these delays every day. This blog explores what’s happening locally, why the system is under such pressure, and how affordable, accessible private counselling can offer a way forward.

The Reality: Thousands Waiting More Than a Year for Support

Recent investigations revealed that:

  • over 5,600 people in Norfolk and Suffolk have been waiting more than 12 months for NHS mental‑health care
  • around 4,000 of those people have not yet received an initial assessment

This means thousands of adults and young people are stuck in limbo — coping alone, deteriorating, and often feeling forgotten.

Norfolk & Suffolk NHS Trust Has Faced Long‑Term Challenges

Norfolk & Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (NSFT) has been placed in special measures four times since 2012. It is consistently described as one of the most pressured mental‑health trusts in the country.

Despite ongoing efforts to improve services, waiting lists have continued to rise over the past year.

This isn’t about blame — it’s about capacity. Demand has grown faster than the system can respond.

The National Picture: Mental‑Health Waits Are Far Longer Than Physical‑Health Waits

Across England, people are eight times more likely to wait over 18 months for mental‑health treatment than for physical‑health care.

A recent analysis found:

  • 16,522 people were still waiting for mental‑health treatment after 18 months
  • Some had been waiting nearly two years (658 days)
  • Only 2,059 people were waiting that long for physical‑health treatment

The imbalance is clear — and it’s even more pronounced in Norfolk and Suffolk.

Long Waits Have Real Consequences

According to Rethink Mental Illness, four in five people (80%) with severe mental illness say their mental health gets worse while waiting for support.

People report:

  • increased anxiety and depression
  • relationship breakdowns
  • time off work
  • crisis episodes
  • A&E visits
  • suicidal thoughts

When someone is already struggling, waiting a year or more can feel impossible.
